Packaging Strategy & Design: From Shelf Strategy to Production-Ready Files

Packaging is where brand strategy meets real-world decision-making. It must communicate value in seconds, function within retail and digital environments, meet legal requirements, and scale across product lines. Our packaging process is built in two major phases: Packaging Discovery & Strategy and Packaging Design & Production.

This approach ensures every design decision is intentional, aligned, and commercially effective.

Phase 1: Packaging Discovery & Strategy

Before any packaging design begins, we do discovery and align on strategy. This foundational phase creates guardrails that streamline the creative process and ensure the final packaging clearly communicates why a customer should buy your product.

Step 1: Discovery for Product Category & Competitive Research

Packaging strategy begins with deep product category research.

We analyze:

To broaden perspective, we often research international markets such as Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and beyond. Other regions frequently approach packaging differently, offering fresh inspiration and alternative solutions for familiar categories.

When possible, we also purchase competitive products to experience them firsthand — understanding materials, scale, finishes, and usability.

Step 2: Competitive Brand Comparison Chart

Research insights on 3-6 competitors are organized into a structured comparison chart.

This chart typically includes a column for each competitor to cross-compare:

This exercise clarifies where the brand sits in the competitive landscape and identifies opportunities for differentiation.

Step 3: Logo Concept Exploration

At this stage, we shift focus from high-level brand strategy to on-pack communication.

Rather than writing final copy, we create a content framework and outline, defining what information must live on the package and how it should be structured.

This includes outlining:

This approved outline ensures clarity and alignment before design begins, preventing confusion later in the process so that by the time we begin concepting, the pack hierarchy is defined.

Step 4: Packaging Mood Board & Visual Direction

Next, we define the visual territory for packaging.

Mood boards explore:

This step aligns creative expectations and bridges strategy with design direction.

Step 5: Packaging Wireframing

Wireframing translates messaging into structure.

A packaging wireframe is a black-and-white layout that establishes:

Typically refined over multiple rounds, wireframes guide design decisions and significantly reduce revisions later in the creative phase.

Phase 2: Packaging Design & Production

Once the packaging strategy is approved, we move into creative development and execution.

Step 6: Choose the Packaging Design Approach

Packaging projects vary based on budget, timeline, and goals. We typically work within three levels of execution:

  1. Full Custom Packaging
    • Custom illustration
    • Custom photography
    • Bespoke visual systems
    • Highest level of differentiation and premium perception
  2. Mid-Level Packaging
    • Stock photography or light illustration
    • Reduced production time
    • Balanced investment between brand impact and budget efficiency
  3. Packaging Light / Minimal
    • Typography-forward design
    • Color blocking and pattern
    • Minimal imagery
    • Common in wellness, beauty, and non-edible categories

Each approach follows the same strategic process but varies in creative depth and resource requirements.

Step 7: Packaging Concept Development

Using the approved strategy, we develop 3–4 packaging concepts (depending on scope) to maximize creativity.

Concepts explore:

Photography and illustrations are billed separately.

Step 8: Design Refinement & Iteration

Once a concept is selected, refinement begins.

This phase includes:

Typically, there are multiple structured rounds of revisions to arrive at a final approved design direction.

Step 9: Asset Integration

Final assets are integrated into production-ready files.

This includes:

Asset creation and retouching are scoped separately, depending on complexity

Step 10: Copywriter Integration

After structure and design are established, a professional copywriter is often brought in as a separate scope to translate the approved content outline into polished, on-brand copy.

The copywriter refines:

This ensures packaging copy is compelling, compliant, and aligned with brand strategy and fits on the final pack.

Step 11: Content Refinement & Compliance Updates

During final design rounds, content is refined to accommodate:

Legal review and compliance approval are handled client-side with legal counsel.

Step 12: Production File Preparation

Final production preparation includes:

Printer coordination, materials, finishes, and dielines are managed in collaboration with the client and print partners.

Step 13: When to Revisit

Revisit or refresh every 5 years.

Packaging should be revisited roughly every five years, often driven by regulatory updates or sustainability improvements. However, new product launches or line extensions may require earlier updates, especially if your packaging system wasn't originally built to scale as much as your business has.

Scaling Packaging Across SKUs

The first packaging concept requires the most strategic and creative investment. Once approved:

Costs vary based on packaging format (boxes, bags, labels, bottles) and level of customization.

Mockups & Prototyping

Before final print, realistic mockups can be created to visualize the packaging in real-world conditions.

High-quality prototypes can include:

These mockups are valuable for:
